Central Saint Martins Graduate Shows

Today the final year students from Womenswear, Menswear, Marketing, Print and Knit presented their final collections to a panel of judges and a full audience of family and friends.The pressure was on as only 40 students will go through to the next round on June 5th, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, where the British press and international talent scouts will be in atendance to decide who is the next big thing.

The standard was impressive. The prevailing trends included, Julie Vernhoven for Gibo inspired print. Acid colours, exagggerated frills and most obviously the use of umbrellas!Perhaps our summer isnt looking so good?! Surprisingly Gold metallic tights popped up a couple of times.
Of course there was the obligatory man dressed as a tent and girl with horses head, but generally the competition was mature and inspiring.

Our backstage source reported a bit of friction when Francesca Versace,(collection above)rolled in with an entourage including, all the Vogue models of the moment, Jemma Kidd on make-up and a team of professional hair sylists. However her collection of bright gowns mixed with nudes (another strong trend of the day)was considered and well-cut. Keep your eye on fashion beat to hear the ultimate verdict after the big show.

Two Projects : One Catwalk

Tonight, London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins battled it out in Cafe de Paris on the catwalk. Both the colleges from the University of the Arts were represented by a handful of current and ex students, to provide a light hearted night of entertainment. The intimate atmosphere was created by a bairly raised short catwalk in the centre of a packed dancefloor with crowds even standing on the staircases to be a part of the action that night. Wine was flowing amongst the trendy gathering and glitter was falling from the hands of the models.

Tokyo Girl In London

When I went to look for another 'English' & 'London' thing,I realised the most obvious one...TOPSHOP!I don't even know how much I have spent there over the years.There no chain store like TOPSHOP in Tokyo. We tend to have small scale chain stores, but they are not so invovled in things like London Fashion Week.I do like TOPSHOP but more chance that you bump into someone wearing the same clothes on the street. As we do not have a huge shop like TOPSHOP in Tokyo,we can find similar clothes in cheaper prices!Don't get me wrong-I wish we had TOPSHOP in Tokyo...I think it's only matter of time...and it would bring a huge impact on Tokyo Girls' fashion.

Penguin Boutique is located one minute walk from West Hampstead Tube Station. It cannot be missed as the decoration of the shop is just fantastic. They have evening dresses,tops,skirts,accessaries and jewellery, that are bought from France,Italy and some from Japan. The owener, Colin and Brenda, go and buy all those beautiful clothes and accessary every month.
The shop is decorated by Colin who once was an interior designer. His inspiration is the European girls who dress individual and unique style and interesting shapes of clothes. Also well-dressed young ladies.

After a string of successful shows in London fashion week, Alice McCall is beginning to really make her mark. The Times this weekend featured her with her equally beautiful and talented, designer sister in a piece on fashionable siblings. Tokyo girls and boys (I'm sure most of Japanese girls and boys) love going for Karaoke with bunch of mates,it doesnt matter if you are an amazing singer or not.No matter how long I have been in UK,I am a Tokyo Girl!When I was stuck in the English country side in my early days I would not dream of going to Karaoke in UK. But now,my girl friends and I have occasional singing session.It is great as it is a Japanese Karaoke place.The songs are available both Japanese and English. Although it is a bit pricey(from£12- during the weekdays 12.00-17.00pm) compare to the one in Japan but we still have so much fun!

Tokyo Girl In London

I left Tokyo when I was 15 years old and have been in London for about 2 years. Since 2000, I don't know how many times I travelled between UK and Japan! As a Fashion Promo and oversea student,I began my 'search' of 'very English' and 'very English Fashion'.

I came across 'James Smith & Sons'; an umbrella company established in 1830. When my friends in Tokyo ask me what is it like in the UK, I would say 'Rainy and grey most of the time, i just can't handle my hair'. When I saw these fabulous umbrellas from James Smith & Sons, I thought 'Maybe these rainy days would not be so bad with them'.
From my point of view, English people are very open to other cultures and fashion and I thought these umbrellas would lighten up their rainy day. How much fun would that be, if every one had umbrellas like these! Like flowers blooming under the grey sky. Let's take advantage of the typical weather!

Sunday Best

Last weekend was the host of a debute theatre event in Londons Eastend. In the depths of a cool Shoreditch bar, actors and drama enthusiasts crammed in to share ideas and show their work on the tiny stage. Fuelled by happy-hour beers and trays of home made cakes, Londons first open mike performance sessions was born.

It kicked off with a political piece, then comedy, and finally to a cheering crowd, a Westwood clad burlesque dancer. There was a real buzz, and everyone felt like they were in on a secret much like the writers and artists of 30's Berlin or London's very own Bloomsbury set.

Used to go to Momo or Sketch in London, but not anymore.

'Marie Antoinette' (2006 film) is written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Kirsten Dunst plays the role of Marie Antoinette. The story seems to be focused on the Queen's younger life and her first five years of marrige to France's last absolute monarch, Louis XVI(Jason Schwartzmann). We have seen the trailer and it looks fab.It looks like the film was made with a modern atmosphere and the music is funky.Very Sofia Coppola! This film will be out in fall 2006. We at Fashionbeat cannot wait to see especially due to the rumoour that Manolo Blahnik designed the shoes. Does anyone know if this is just a rumour, as we couldn't find any info! Calm After the Storm

May Day bank holiday is to summer, what Friday night is to a weekend. All that hope and promise. All over the country we exposed our mottled white skin in the glaring sunlight, sat huddled in damp back gardens and famed the flames of the first barbecues of the year. Along with frozen picnics and premature garden parties inevitably comes booze, for the first time we can really understand why tramps use spirits to ward off the cold nights.
After a particularly excitable weekend, the perfect salvation was found in a new night a Brixtons Ritzy Cinema. The chilled out cinema played host to a calming DJ set and live music against a background of illustration and short films. The crowd looked tired but content from a heavy weekend, but soldiered on with the drinking; crammed out onto the opened balcony. What a lovely evening guys, perfect end to the start of summer.
